How to Manage Vertigo at Home

How to Manage Vertigo at Home

Vertigo is not a condition in itself. It is actually a symptom of an underlying condition. In most cases, vertigo just gets better on its own without any kind of treatment.

What is Vertigo?

When you have vertigo, it feels like the whole world is spinning around you. Your brain tells you that you are off balance even when you are actually not. A vertigo attack may last for about several seconds to even hours. If your vertigo keeps coming back or if it is greatly affecting your daily life, you should consult a general practitioner or a provider of comprehensive neurology in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Causes of Vertigo

There are different causes of vertigo. These include the following:

  • Problems with the inner ear such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV (most common), labyrinthitis, Meniere’s disease, and vestibular neuronitis
  • Migraine
  • Certain medications
  • At times, the cause may be unknown.

10 Vertigo Management Tips

Before trying out any of the following, it will be best to see a provider of neuro care in North Carolina to know more about this symptom.

  1. Perform specific maneuvers or exercises to reduce the “spinning” feeling. These include the Epley maneuver, Semont-Toupet maneuver, and Brandt-Daroff exercise.
  2. Stress can be a trigger for Meniere’s disease which is a cause for vertigo. Manage vertigo by reducing your stress levels through relaxation, meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises. Avoid stressful situations as much as possible, too.
  3. Another trigger for vertigo is lack of sleep. Make sure to get plenty of sleep each night to keep vertigo at bay.
  4. Keep yourself hydrated. At the same time, reduce your salt intake.
  5. When you feel dizzy, sit down immediately. Do not bend.
  6. If you experience the “spinning” feeling, go in a quiet, dark place or room to minimize such feeling.
  7. Anxiety can worsen vertigo. If you are suffering from this symptom, relax and keep calm.
  8. Do not stand up immediately after waking up.
  9. When you sleep, raise your head by putting 2 or more pillows under it.
  10. Make sure to move the head carefully and slowly when you are performing any task.
